Wood and Stain
Wood has many natural and distinctive characteristics. As wood is a natural product each board has its own unique growth pattern. This means that no two trees will look the same and there will be varying wood grain and patterns with each piece of furniture. Each board will have slight variation in colour depending on how the wood absorbs the stain colour. This is not considered a defect as it does not affect the structural integrity of the wood.
Pine is a creamy white colour and knots are a common characteristic. The grade of pine used is “one common” grade. This demands only tight knots and less defects. The knots will also be small and are not as dark and coarse as the knots in a lower grade.
Disclaimer: the finisher is NOT responsible for variation from the sample. Although these sample photos are taken by professional photographers; we still find that there is variation depending on the screen / settings used to view the samples. We strive to ensure stains are as close to the samples as possible, however, there still may be variation due to the natural grain in wood. We are not responsible for the dissimilarity of the sample shown on your screen compared to our samples here at the showroom. We recommend coming into the showroom to see the samples, in person, to avoid disappointment.
Wormy maple also comes from maple trees, but trees that have been infested by the ambrosia beetle. This small beetle bores a network of tunnels and short galleries called cradles. These cradles appear as small holes in the wormy maple wood. There will also be black and grey streaks that accompany each tunnel and adjacent wood, a fungus is responsible for this. The holes and streaks add a unique look to the wood without affecting its structural integrity and as the wood is kiln dried, it will contain no beetles.

Oak (Red Oak): oak wood comes from an oak tree, which consists of sapwood and heartwood. The sapwood tends to be a light brown colour while the heartwood is a pinkish reddish brown. Oak does have more of a coarse grain than maple wood.
QcOak (Quarter Sawn Oak): quarter sawn oak wood comes from an oak tree. The difference between the quarter sawn oak and oak is the angle in which the wood is cut. When cutting quarter sawn oak, the quarter log is mounted on the table so that the growth rings hit the blade at right angles. The quarter slicing cut produces a straight grain effect as well as a flake pattern.

Maple: maple trees consist of both sapwood and heartwood. Sapwood tends to be lighter in colour with a greyish white hue and the heartwood will vary from light to dark reddish brown. For the maple wood, only the sapwood is used, and the heartwood is sorted out.
Brown Maple: brown maple comes from the same tree as maple. The difference being that with maple the heartwood is sorted out, but with brown maple both the sapwood and the heartwood are used. Therefore, the brown maple is not as consistent in colour as maple because there will be a mix of the greyish white hues from the sapwood and the reddish hues from the heartwood.

Cherry: cherry trees consist of a yellow and pink sapwood as well as a reddish brown to deep red heartwood. Cherry wood is made from the red heartwood only and may naturally contain brown pith flecks and small gum pockets. The colour will deepen over time.
Speckled Cherry: speckled cherry comes from the same trees as cherry, which again consist of both sapwood and heartwood. The difference being speckled cherry uses a mixture of both the yellow and pink sapwood as well as the reddish brown to deep red heartwood. Speckled cherry may also naturally contain brown pith flecks and small gum pockets.
